The Frankland River region is recognised as one of Australia’s finest shiraz growing regions. The Mediterranean climate of warm days and cold nights, combined with the unique ironstone soil found in our Isolation Ridge Vineyard produces shiraz of power, refinement and finesse. Our Isolation Ridge Vineyard Shiraz aims to capture all the quintessential fruit opulence, black pepper and spice notes for which the region has become renowned.
From The Winery
Dry mild conditions provided another ideal vintage in the Frankland River region. This provided balance, elegance and complexity to the wine which will benefit ageing.
Colour: Mid-weighted brick red
Bouquet: A complex and concentrated blend of fruit aromas with spice, black pepper and ironstone flintiness with hints of oak
Palate: Vibrant fruit gives an elegance of weight to the front palate. Blackberry, red olive, ironstone and the use of subtle, spicy French oak give complexity. A sweet core of red currant and plum flavoured fruit complements the fine-grained tannins, which gives the wine length.
An elegant yet intensely flavoured wine distinguished by briary fruit flavours and enticing mineral complexity. A fine example of an outstanding vintage in Frankland River it is approachable now but has the structure and finesse to reward long term cellaring.
Shiraz (99.5%) and Viognier (0.5%)
Fruit for this wine was sourced from three different locations in the Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate. The vineyard is planted on undulating northern and eastern facing slopes and has duplex soils of ironstone gravel and loam over a clay sub soil. The vine canopy is trained on a combination of vertical shoot and Geneva Double Curtin (GDC). The Isolation Ridge Vineyard is managed under organic principles (certified organic 2010), a practice we feel important for reflecting the uniqueness of site.
This wine was fermented as long and slowly as possible, at temperatures not exceeding 20C in open fermentation tanks that allowed the cap to be worked by plunging and gently pumping over. An extended maceration period followed completion of the ferment to allow optimal colour, flavour and tannin extraction. It was aged for 18 months in 500 litre French oak puncheons.
Reviews
2015 Vintage: 95 Points, James Halliday - The Wine Companion "The sheer power of red and black cherry fruit, spice, bramble, earth, tannins, oak and a twinkle of acidity all demand your attention. Paradoxically, no one player captures the loud applause the wine generates."
2015 Vintage: 94 Points, Mike Bennie - The Wine Front “Frankland Estate rightly comes to mind for riesling wines, but their shiraz has always been excellent. This 2014 release reminds us that medium-bodied, red-fruity, spicy, peppery shiraz is excellent under their care. It’s tight and long in flavour, complex, unfurling beautifully in a glass with air time. Super release.”
2015 Vintage: 96 Points, Ray Jordan - The West Australian Wine Guide “These now mature vines are turning out exceptional fruit from this single vineyard. This is another shiraz that captures the essence of the region. It’s more medium bodied with a mix of gravelly, subtle dusty earth characters complementing the sweet seductive fruit. There’s a subtle ironstone character that emerges. It’s a wine with a distinct vineyard character.”
