Heathcote has always produced outstanding Shiraz, I think there can be no question of that. The concern for many has been the cost of the good wines. Well thankfully now there are wonderful wineries like Heathcote Winery who are producing top quality Shiraz that speaks of the region and the land it comes from but doesn't attract the huge price tag.
The wine is a brilliant ruby red with purple hues, it is immediately delightful to look at in the glass and sets the scene wonderfully for what is to come. On the nose you'll find lifted blueberry and forest-fruits dominate, Then there is a backdrop of spicy vanillin and plums. It is a wonderfully aromatic red wine. Bright fruit dominates the palate, framed by chewy finegrained American (and some French) oak; this with natural acidity ensures further development in bottle. It is a lively, medium-bodied Shiraz, fleshy and dense in flavour. It finishes long with primary fruit and supple tannins.
From the Winery
The fruit for Cravens Place is sourced from the rich red soils at the northern end of the Heathcote region. The wine is made in an immediately approachable and more modern style, focusing on plenty of upfront primary fruit flavours and a soft, smooth tannin profile. Aged for 12 months with fine grained American oak, this is fantastic Heathcote Shiraz that delivers well beyond its price.
