Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz 2008

The Armagh Shiraz.gif

Deep plum red with purple tints. Intense, tightly coiled aromas of cranberry, mulberry, milk chocolate, boysenberry and spearmint. It is bright, fresh and balanced with intense yet reserved characters of rosemary, sage, cinnamon, cedar and black pepper. Flavours of red currants, black cherries and blueberries are in abundance, with an undercurrent of freshly turned earth and truffles in the background.

A wine of impeccable quality and legendary status; an absolute icon of Australian fine wine. Imbued with the integrity of old vines, the meticulous character of a unique vineyard and the expertise of a master winemaker, The Armagh sits shoulder to shoulder with Grange, Run Rig, Hill of Grace et al. The name of ‘Armagh’ was bestowed by the original Irish settlers who arrived in 1849, and named the lush rolling hill after their homeland.

James Halliday, The Wine Companion: 96
Deep crimson-purple; the bouquet is seductively complex, multi-fruit, spice and oak aromas playing tag with each other; the full-bodied palate continues the game, with lush black fruits and fine, savoury tannins in perfect balance, oak and alcohol seamlessly woven into the core of wine. The cork is good and well-inserted, but will prejudice the wine post 2030.

Gary Walsh: 94
Prune, toasty wood, purple fruit, liquorice, floral notes. Liquor cassis and berry notes, fine intense tannin, dark chocolate and savoury wood. A little drying, sweet pruney finish. Show a minor amount of heat, but covers it. No shortage of length or power.
