The glass is striking brick red with a flecks of crimson tint. Lovely earthy aromas of dark cherry, toasty spice and liquorice on the nose.
There is fantastic ripeness to the palate, having benefitted from a warm and dry vintage. There's a great depth of dark fruit on the palate, intermingling with French oak spiciness and touches of white pepper. Grainy tannins allow the wine to linger nicely, and provide a persistent finish.
This is absolutely one for the cellar, with 10+ years potential. A versatile wine that can be enjoyed with our without food. Recommended with anything from roast beef or lasagne to lamb chops.
Accolades and Awards:
James Halliday: 93 (2013): Smooth to the point of satiny; ripe without being overdone; fleshy and delicious all the way to the end. Regardless of price there's little more one could ask; the price simply makes it all the more attractive.
From the winery:
Low yielding grapes from premium vineyards were selected from a range of South Australian vineyards then vinified by traditional winemaking methods and matured in small French and American oak casks before careful blending and bottling unfiltered.
The reclusive Alan Webster lived alone in the years after the second world war in the scrub land behind the Kilikanoon cellar door, west of the hamlet of Penwortham. Trapping rabbits, growing his own fruits and vegetables and making his own wines in a galvanised lean to, he was given the nickname 'Killerman' by Mort Mitchell and his friends when they were growing up, after Alan's bush survival skills of 'kill em and eat em', thus the legend of Killerman was born.
