"94 POINTS. The extra years show up in the colour; rich and concentrated, with black fruits, mocha and fruitcake characters corralled by soft tannins and a warm finish." - James Halliday.
VINTAGE: 2007 will be remembered as one of Australia’s driest ever seasons. Tiny yields and consequently rapid ripening resulted in the earliest vintage in memory. Our Thomas Block vineyard and its deep alluvial soils again proved its worth by buffering the effect of an extreme drought year.
VINIFICATION: The grapes were hand picked at optimum flavour and destemmed into a small open fermenter. 20% of the clear juice was run offand discarded to maximise concentration. After extended postfermentation maceration, the wine was pressed to 100% French oak barriques. Following 18 months in oak, the wine was bottled under screwcap without fining and with minimal filtration. The philosophy behind this wine is to achieve an expression of the vineyard and a wine with excellent aging potential, worthy of bearing Jean’s name.
