Like something different from the Barossa? Then this is it: becoming increasingly popular over the past few years, this is a Shiraz Mataro worth exploring!
Awards and Accolades
2015 Vintage: 91 Points - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front "You can count on it. It’s reliably good. Blackberry, plum, anise and leather flavours run amiably through the palate. It’s warm and rich-enough with a minerally, smoky, spicy finish. It won’t bowl anyone over with its quality but it will please most red wine lovers. Lots of flavour, and some character too."
2014 Vintage; 92 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion "50% shiraz (20-30yo), 50% mataro (50+yo), machine-harvested, crushed/destemmed, open-fermented with cultured yeast, 5 days on skins, 12 months in oak. A 50/50% blend of these two varieties isn?t common,, but works well in this instance, introducing a savoury crosscut to the shiraz, the tannins work well too. The branded glass bottle is a marketing plus."
From the Winemaker
My blend of Shiraz and Mataro has won a loyal legion of fans who love its expressive, savoury Barossan goodness. Since we started making it, it’s picked up a bit of silverware at the local wine show and a gong for the “Best Value Red Wine in Australia” in Nick Stock’s Good Wine Guide. Even the testing 2011 vintage wears a bit of gold bling courtesy of the good folk at the Adelaide Wine Show. We here at Teusner have always followed our own path. Indulging in our love of the Barossa classics – Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz, the old vine fruit we’re lucky enough to receive from our growers, and making the style of wine we like to drink ourselves. Our good fortune is found in the restaurants and wine shops that love stocking and selling our wine and the wine drinkers who stick their hands in their pockets to buy the stuff…which enables us to keep on the pleasure path that is making wine in the Barossa.
Ultimately, the irony of independence is that you rarely achieve it standing alone. Thanks for the support and enjoy the wine!
