The first thing that hits you with this amazing new vintage from Torbreck is the delectable and soft cordial-like aroma. Resembling a sophisticated (and intoxicating) Ribena, the nose lures you in with a faux dark berry bouquet, gives a glimpse of caramelised plums and vanilla, before relenting to its true character of rhubarb sprinkled with spice, cardamom and nutmeg.
On the palate it is a similar – if subtler – story. The berries pave the way for spices, allowing you to discover for the first time a hint of dark chocolate that was hovering mystically in the background. Finally a smoky dryness pervades, incorporating a tannin structure that sees the wine out with class and authority.
This is a wine that lives up to the symbolism its name suggests: a day spent amongst the woods, sampling its fruits, before strolling through ambient mist to a log cabin and settling by the fireplace.
If you've tried previous vintages and been impressed (like most of us), you’re in for a real treat here. David Powell has taken this trademark blend to a new level.
