I’ve been told you can’t please all of the people all of the time, but whoever said that clearly never had a bottle of this beauty of a drop to share. Domenic Torzi and Tracey Matthews manage to somehow consistently put out shiraz that not only define everything we love about the Barossa, but manage to stand alone as examples of good winemaking.
A big nose full of ripe and juicy berries, sweet plum, spice and oak and an equally impressive palate full of the intense flavours one associates with the region – dark fruit, liquorice and chocolate with a creamy texture and well integrated fine tannins. This is the full package, and will make for much happy drinking now and in the future.
Reviews
93 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front "Striking purple as it hits the glass, blackberry pastille, chocolate, spice, cured meats. Medium to full bodied, intense and juicy dark pastille fruit flavour, with spice and dried mint and herbs, pleasing almost graphite tannin, clean acidity, and a sexy-time finish of succulence and length. Lovely expression of cool Eden in the glass, ready now, or perhaps ’till June 2030."
2015 Vintage: 94 Points, Special Value Wine - James Halliday, Wine Companion "25% whole bunches, warm-fermented in open top milk vats with wild yeast, matured in used French oak, unfined and unfiltered. This is an awesomely full-bodied, power-laden wine, deeply coloured and awash with black fruits and tannins, licorice and charry meat contributing part of the complexity. The one thing I don't get is that this vineyard is in the Eden Valley - why use the Barossa catch-all GI, especially given the wine has a powerful sense of place."
From the Winery
In the garage the shiraz fruit was gently destemmed including 25% whole bunch into open top milk vats and fermented warm with natural bearing yeasts birthed from the vineyard with soft pump overs, hand plunging and basket pressed to barrel to complete ferment. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Expect all that this label represents; wine enjoyment!
Average winter rains and good fruit set was a good sign to vintage 2015. The summer months between December and February was mild to hot but did receive a welcoming rain event in January. Temperatures abated late February and March leading into harvest produced a beautifully complex & flavoured hills shiraz.
