  Turkey Flat Shiraz 2013

Turkey Flat Shiraz.gif

This is yet another Australian option that consistently offers earth moving wines year after year. Sourced from some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world this full-bodied classic displays intense brooding fruit balanced by the finest French oak. This is structured and serious, a wine to lose your senses in with a dominance of blackberries and spice, supporting that golden, cedary oak character. This is dinner party territory with a fine rib eye steak or a platter of mature cheeses. A true Barossa Valley icon.

Awards and Accolades

95 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion
"Turkey Flat has long established its distinguished, yet seemingly effortless, medium-bodied style that doesn't have to carry to burden of high alcohol; the flavours cover the full range of red, purple and black fruits, with a juicy core given texture and shape by precisely managed oak and tannins. Its overarching balance guarantees a long life."

94(95) Points - Tim White, Adelaide Financial Review
"Fragrant, spicy and fruitcake-cedar scented. Has Souk spiciness. Serious, yet sensitively weighted in the mouth, with mid-palate creaminess and building tannins. Subtly smoked oak which compliments the fruit. Massive power: goes on and on."

2012 Vintage: 96 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion
"Deep colour; the backbone of this wine comes from the vines planted in 1847 on the Bethany Road Vineyard, some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world; French oak was used at the end of the fermentation and subsequent maturation; everything it should be from '12, with layers of black fruits, liquorice, tannins and cedar oak. Seriously underpriced."

Campbell Mattinson says:
Turkey Flat has slowly, slowly become a more sophisticated wine over the years. It’s the same same, but different. This release has it where it’s been wanting to be. It’s not impenetrable, it’s not monolithic, it’s not simple or necessarily easy to categorise. For a Barossa shiraz in 2014, these are all positives. It’s ripe and licoricey but it has nutty, herbal notes too and quite a deal of them. Smoky oak plays a role, but it’s easy to miss. It’s clean, juicy and well-fruited, but it has a sinewy aspect. It’s medium-bodied with fine-grained, fruit-filled tannin. It benefits from being given time to breathe in the glass. In all, it’s a top Turkey Flat release.

From the Winery

The Turkey Flat Vineyard boasts some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world. Planted in 1847, these hard-working gnarled old vines are still producing fantastic grapes. They are dry grown with their roots extending metres into the soil in search of moisture.

Much of the credit for the best Shiraz made in the Barossa is due to old vines such as these. The fact that these vines still exist is largely due to a far-sighted quarantine scheme, in which South Australia was spared the phylloxera outbreak which devastated the vineyards of Europe, America and subsequently parts of Australia in the late 1800’s.

This shiraz is a result of a very intricate blending process. After each parcel of fruit is individually vinified & aged in specially selected French oak barrels, the final blend is created with careful consideration to upholding its reputation for cellaring gracefully, retaining its freshness and balance for many years.

This year we were honoured with the Turkey Flat Shiraz receiving the Barossa Trust Mark. The Barossa Trust Mark is a mark of aspirational standard set by the Barossa region. It provides you with a guarantee and assurance of quality.
