Don't let the name deceive you, this is no delicate little insect fluttering peacefully from flower to flower throughout the garden. If this Shiraz were indeed a dragonfly, it would be some sort of prehistoric rapture like creature that ate small goats and local villagers told mythic tales around campfires. This is a dragonfly of more dragon-like proportions. Spicy, smoky French oak encases plusher black fruits, plums, peanuts, dark chocolate and anise. There’s even a minerally graphite dimension to its form. Tannins aren't totally finessed but they are savoury and long, giving it a meaty and solid finish. I had to double check the pricing on this one, because for under $20 a bottle it really does seem too good to be true!
PAST ACCOLADES AND AWARDS:
Gold: Geographe Wine Show
James Halliday: 94 Bright crimson; the fragrant, verging flowery, bouquet has red berries, spice and a dusting of cooking chocolate, the supple medium-bodied palate spanning a similar range, starting with sweet fruit and finishing with fine, cedary tannins reflecting maturation in new and used French oak.
Gary Walsh: 92 Black fruit, spice, char-grilled meat, chocolate and toffee with a whiff of new leather. Medium bodied, plump and slick in texture, with fine grained almost graphite tannin, well bedded and unforced acidity, plum and red fruit with a lick of jersey caramel on the finish. Then spice and dried herb to taper it in. Great to drink. Also, an unusual level of sophistication for a wine priced under $20. Terrific.”
