Awards and Accolades
2015 Vintage: 95 Points, Special Value Wine - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion "This is from the big boys school, armed to the teeth with black fruits, bitter chocolate and tannins lined up with military precision. It is medium to full-bodied, and a dead set red for prolonged cellaring, balance both now and into the far future ensuring it hits the target dead centre."
From the Winery
The late Greg Trott saw many of his dreams realised at Wirra Wirra. Yet one vision eluded him – to build a medieval siege machine, or trebuchet. Why? To use as a catapult to bomb neighbouring wineries with bottles of wine of course. This wine is part of a range, The RGT Collection which remembers the Pioneering spirit of Richard Gregory Trott. Classic McLaren Vale Shiraz with a touch of Viognier – just for something different. Just like Trotty.
Shiraz parcels were harvested from mid to late March alongside a small viognier parcel. The white viognier fruit was crushed, de-stemmed and co fermented with an earlier shiraz pick. Each ferment was tasted daily by the winemakers to monitor the level of extraction through the fermentation period. Once the desired level of colour, flavour and tannin from the fruit was extracted for the Catapult Shiraz style the fermentation was pressed to seasoned French oak. Once malo-lactic fermentation was completed in barrel the wines were racked and returned. Select parcels were racked to tank early to maintain style and aromatic freshness, with the final components blended for bottling after a total of 15 months in oak. The Catapult style is bright and juicy with silky, textural tannins and plump fruit - utterly drinkable McLaren Vale Shiraz.
