A superb sparkling from the Adelaide Hills winery. This 50% / 40% / 10% Chardonnay Pinot Noir Pinot Meunier blend has spent at least 24 months on lees developing great complexity and flavour.
Medium yellow-golden in the glass, the nose is citrus, pear, sweet green apple and toasted cashews. On the palate, creamy textures and flavours of nougat and mousse lead into a crisp finish with good length. Recommended with shellfish dishes.
Award and Accolades
2013 Vintage: ☆☆☆☆½ - Tony Love & Mike Gribble, The Advertiser "Well regarded now as a top class Adelaide Hills sparkling house, this has taken in more chardonnay to the cuvee this year and it shows with delightful white nectarine and lemon zest flavour dominance, some nougat like complexity with textual minerals teasing the palate. More-ish and salivating. Delicious."
2013 Vintage: 94 Points - Tyson Stelzer, Wine Companion "A magnificently elegant Adelaide Hills sparkling that sings with a more than two-thirds majority of chardonnay, charged with the energy of partial malic acidity and low dosage of 8g/l and softened by almost 3 years on lees. The result is effortlessly harmonious, confidently walking the high-wire between lively fruit expression and graceful restraint. Magnificently crafted."
From the Winery
The 2014 Loftia blend comprises 50% Chardonnay, giving finesse and 40% Pinot Noir, providing power and body on the palate. For the first time we added the 3rd famous Champagne variety, Pinot Meunier (10%). This adds richness and flavour. Ageing for a minimum of 24 months on yeast lees develops complexity with aromas of toasted nuts with ripe red apple and citrus characters.
Different parcels of fruit are all hand-picked and whole bunch pressed separately into tank for settling. Fermentation of these small batches lasts around 12 days. In 2014 10% of the wine was fermented and aged in old oak giving extra texture. Full Malolactic ferment took place to soften the acidity and add complexity. Blending of the base wines is carried out in early spring before we tirage (bottle) the wine.
The bottles are then stored at 14 degrees, which is just right for a long consistent second ferment. Each bottle is riddled and disgorged on site at our Longwood winery. Small batches are disgorged at a time to allow the remaining bottles to continue developing complexity on lees as long as possible. The dosage liquor added at disgorging is crafted using a blend of base wines and is then aged for a minimum of 12 months
