Vibrant amber-gold in colour, the nose is beautifully fresh and light, delivering notes of sherried fruit combined with a tempting spicy sweetness and hints of sappy oak. Full bodied flavours of sherried fruit, oak and nuances of peat on the palate, leading into a long, flavoursome finish, leaving a spicy aftertaste.
About the Producer
An excellent introduction to the distillery style. Glenfarclas means Glen of the Green Grassland, and the freshness on the nose reminds me of grassland in spring. So, for me, this is the ‘farclas’ aroma. In 2006 this was named the ‘Best Sherried Whisky’ in the Single Malt World Cup. More recently Glenfarclas 12 Years Old won Gold at the Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival in 2007 and again in 2008.
Glenfarclas produce outstanding malts and in an unusually wide variety of ages. Experienced tasters usually place them in the top three or four from this most distinguished district. The Glenfarclas malts are at the heftier end of the Speyside line-up, though they are not the very heaviest. The Glenfarclas malts are the strong, silent type: tall, dark and handsome, notably firm bodied, but willing to reveal a sweet side to their nature. They are excellent company at any time and especially after dinner. Glenfarclas means “valley of the green grass”. The distillery is about a mile from the Spey, beyond which the heather-covered hills rise toward Ben Rinnes from which the distillery’s water flows.
