  Balnaves Chardonnay 2013

A great vintage of one of Coonawarra's most consistently impressive chardonnays! Rich lemon citrus on the nose, there's white stonefruit and light acidity on the palate. The finish displays delicately balanced oak. Drink now or hold.

Awards and Accolades

95 points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion
"Hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed direct to Louis Latour barriques (30% new), part wild, part bayanus cultured yeast. White peach and fresh grapefruit flavours glide across the tongue, the finish fresh, the oak controlled. Has flourished over the past year, elegance the key word."

92 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
"Balnaves is a reliable performer when it comes to Chardonnay.
Peach, passionfruit crème brûlée, ripe limes, cedar and spice. Medium bodied, flavoursome and slippery, but with a firm core of lime acidity and the seduction of that crème brûlée again, drizzled with sweet lime and its zest. It’s tight, yet generous and really punches out through the finish. Excellent."

2012 Vintage: 92 points - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
"Balnaves flies a flag for Coonawarra chardonnay. They pretty much never produce a bad one. Richness and length. It has both in spades. Peach, toasty/caramelly oak, lime, kiwi fruit. It's tangy but powerful, oak-overt but racy through the finish. In short, it's impressive, and would please folks from a number of different angles, with a number of different tastes"

From the Winery

Whole bunch pressed juice was barrel fermented on solids in new (24%) and seasoned Lois Latour and Seguin Moreau Chagny barriques, with 40% of the ferments being wild and the balance AWRI 1375 yeast. Lees contact for eleven months preceded bottling in March 2014. 42 barriques of Chardonnay were produced from the 2013 vintage.
