The quality of Felton Road's Chardonnay leaves us wondering why this variety is spurned by the majority of Central Otago producers. Felton Rd's Chardonnay is always rather exotic in style - tangy lime and guava with a lively yet luxurious palate - and superb structure which gives it great age-ability. It's a very refreshing wine but has the right amount of chardonnay weight..
Awards and Accolades
2014 Vintage: 93 Points - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front "Relatively early picking. Thirteen years of biodynamic farming on this site, and winemaker Blair Walter says the vines are really in the zone. Same old thing in winery, whole bunch press and straight to barrel. Natural ferment usually takes up to a week or more to start, then bubbles along for anywhere between weeks and months. A haze in 2014 meant that the wine needed a filter, which it normally doesn’t get. Suitably fresh scented – grapefruit, citrus pith, fine marzipan aromas. High toned and pretty. Tightly wound, licked with nougat oak flavours but feels brisk and citrus driven with a flicker of saline mineral feel throughout. Finishes tight, lightly chalky, tangy. Beautiful, sleek, straight forward chardonnay."
2013 Vintage: 95 Points - James Halliday "White peach and grapefruit drive the bouquet and palate, 10% new oak totally absorbed by the fruit. Long, minerally acidity cleanses the mouth, leaving the finish fresh. 100% malolactic fermentation, and neither fined nor filtered. "
2012 Vintage: 95 Points - Tyson Stelzer "2012 is one of the great blends of Felton Road’s three chardonnay vineyards, with a richness of fruit character typical of the vintage, yet with a focused precision and intricately defined structure, thanks to rapid picking. Struck flint and gunsmoke complexity hovers over pristine white peach and lemon purity, with a core of intense stone fruits, swallowing 11% new oak. Focused acidity and fine mineral structure build impressive precision."
From the Winery:
Vineyard tasting notes: 'Brilliant lemon gold with a seamlessly integrated nose; floral with subtle hazelnut notes and white peach. Minerality predominates over delicate lemon zest and crisp acid. Very textural on the palate, full not fat. Long, fresh and clean on the finish with not a hint of oak. This wine is unfined and unfiltered, the first time we have achieved this with our Bannockburn Chardonnay.'
