A more worthy reviewer might be able to say something about Penfolds that is ground-breaking or enlightening, but in the face of such heritage, I will merely say, "Penfolds, wow". The producer that really can do no wrong. Their Rawson's Retreat Chard stands as a dwarf among giants in the portfolio, but when given the room to shine, boy does it impress!
If Penfolds do anything well it's classic styles and this Chardonnay is such a beautiful representation of a producer doing what it does best, making delicious wine! Loaded with plenty of soft, lovely fresh peach character, with melon fruit aromatics that are well supported by an underlying touch of subtle spicy oak. An instantly approachable wine. A wine that offers both up front fruit & length of flavour on the finish. A wine has an uncommon level of complexity for an offering at this price point, it is ideally matched to poultry dishes or seafood with a rich, buttery sauce.
