Shelton Margaret River Vineyard Estate Chardonnay 2011
We are so used to hearing all the negativity about Victoria's not so spectacular 2011 vintage, that we forget 2011 was one of the best vintages the Margaret River had seen! Here is your chance to get your hot little hands on a wine that emulates just how great 2011 really was for the old Margs!
A wine that keeps very good company; Shelton's Margaret River Vineyard Estate Chardonnay comes from a vineyard that shares fences with iconic Margaret River producers Cullen, Vasse Felix and Howard Park. The vineyard was planted in 1996 and the consistent quality of its grapes have been responsible for many award winning wines. This is a bottle of the Margaret River elite. The glass is a slightly developed pale straw with a very subtle green tinge flowing through. The nose is grassy and herbaceous, with a gentle flower petal caressing those scents. There are lashings of rockmelon and honeydew coupled with nutmeg spice. It is a strong showing here, the aromas do compete for your attention, but everything is balanced and inviting. The palate is a different dimension and is almost unrelated to the aromas experienced... but you just have to wait a few moments, after the initial burst, everything just seems to wind down and open up to allow you to experience those aromas in full force. There is a bit of oak here, which is mainly noticeable as a woody spice and is the main component of the finish... but we'll get to that in a sec. The palate is mid weight with butterscotch and nutmeg the first horses out of the barrier. Followed by the rockmelon and honeydew, but with a tiny gooseberry twist. This is an exciting wine that pulls your palate into all sorts of directions. The finish is powerful and lingers intensely for many moments after the final sip has gone down. In summary this is a very expressive wine, with tonnes of dimensions and wow factor going on. I would classify it as a savoury wine. Nice.
