De Bortoli Noble One Botrytis Semillon 2009

Noble One.gif

"Starts off the eye-seduction with its bright golden colour. Apricot nectar, floral and golden syrup aromas. A bit more lifted expression of the Noble One franchise here. Tastes that way too – a touch more pippy, fresher, and characterised by a cumquat rush of sweet exterior and gently sour interior, if you get the drift. It’s a lively wine, still carrying the glycerol, elixir-like texture expected, and definitively concentrated, but there’s a crispness in the fringes that aids drinkability. There’s a touch of spicy oak floating around the mouth and a lick of lime juice finishes the wine’s satiny profile, though residual honeyed characters roll around the palate for ages. This brighter styling suits this impressively decadent wine." - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front.

The 2009 year began with hot conditions until the middle of February when they received overnight rain followed by more showers during March. This initiated the onset of botrytis which was enhanced by showers and early morning dews during April providing good conditions for the infection to progress with harvesting occurring over five days in the third week of May.

Vineyards that have regularly provided fruit for Noble One over the years were once again selected for the 2009 vintage. These vineyards consistently produce ideal botrytised Semillon fruit with sweetness, lusciousness and intense botrytis flavours synonymous with this wine. To maximise the blending options for Noble One each vineyard is harvested then fermented and matured individually. Each vineyard has unique characteristics that enhance the complexity seen in this wine.

Light golden in the glass, the bouquest is a rich blend of stone fruits and citrus reveals loads of power in a rich vibrant wine with sweet vanillin oak and spiciness adding to this lush and decadent wine.

Layers of intensely ripe botrytis fruit, creamy citrus, nectarine, honey and cumquat blended with attractive oak. Unctuous with a slight touch of refreshing acidity gives length and structure which then delivers a beautifully balanced wine.

This wine won a silver medal in the 2013 Adelaide Wine Show.
