Medium straw hue. Honeysuckle, preserved ginger and cardamon nose, pithy lemons and grapefruit skin, freshly cut white pears and a hint of white joobs. Like fresh rain on beach rocks. Crisp like biting into a fresh green apple. Tight with a melting acidity that lingers like cottage lemonade. A really lively palate with a solid flick of crisp citrus. Food friendly, versatile and accessible, it will become your best table mate, sublime with sashimi or goat's curd bruchetta.
Awards and Accolades
2015 Vintage: 92 Points - Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front "Clean and lively. Drinks easily and well and yet, if you look closely, there’s character to be enjoyed/appreciated. Reckon they have got this one spot on. Flavour, texture and length. Lovely."
2015 Vintage: 92 Points - James Halliday, Wine Companion "Part from the Yarra Valley, part from the upper end of the King Valley, hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, 70% cool-fermented in stainless steel, 30% fermented and matured in French oak (10% new). It is, I suppose, an indication of the transparency of pinot gris that it should be so radically reshaped by (only) 30% barrel ferment; the bouquet is decidedly (pleasantly) smoky/funky, the palate firmly anchored to nashi pear, but lifted by citrussy acidity on the finish."
From the Winery
In 2016 we continued to include two very special vineyards from the upper King Valley: Symphonia Vineyard at Myrrhee (altitude 350m) and Crouchers Vineyard at Whitlands (altitude 800m). These parcels add a spike of minerally citrus to the wine.
Season: The Yarra Valley experienced slightly above average rainfall for the 2015 winter. This replenished the soils of much needed moisture leading into the growing season. The dry mild conditions through spring lowered the potential for disease. This enabled us to keep the vineyards in a clean healthy state. Very good yields and excellent quality appeared to be the theme from all vineyards this year.
Fruit was 100% hand picked and whole bunch pressed. 25% wild yeast ferment to add complexity. 70% of the fruit went to stainless steel for a long, cold fermentation to trap in freshness. 30% of the fruit was fermented and matured in French oak (10% new) for a luscious mouthfeel.
