Previous vintages have been described as a 'gold plated bargain', not to mention appearing in James Halliday's top 100 wines. The 2016 continues the Castle Rock tradition of producing stunning riesling with an approachable price tag. Beautifully balanced and with great length, this is fantastic drinking now, but will develop with cellaring of 5-10 years.
Awards and Accolades
95 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion "A 10+-year track record with this wine leaves no doubt about its longevity, and the way it will burst into song with 5+ years bottle age, and continue that song for another 5 years thereafter. Pale straw-green; length and balance are the cornerstones of this beautiful wine."
93 Points - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front "The 2016 was relatively tricky as there was a fair bit of rain, but the white varieties seemed to do pretty well. These wines always show such fine acidity. Poronogurups always known for citrus and tight acid profiles, though there are variations in site in the sub-region of course. Great views of the Stirling Ranges. Lemony tang! Floral notes, pure, whiffs of wet slate and struck flint. Palate is etched with fine acidity and cool citrus flow. It’s refreshing, edgy, lean and long, but has an approachability and drinkability that works so far in its favour. Great drinking."
From the Winery
Intense lime juice backed by a delicate fragrance of orange blossom and lavender giving a bouquet that is zesty and fresh, yet also of great depth. The feature of the palate is the tightly wound structure that is enveloped by beautiful rich lime juice fruit characters. This fruit richness provides the generosity and succulence that is so appealing as a young wine. The core of natural acidity creates that great structure, finesse and length for the wine. The balance between the fruit generosity and tight acid structure is the hallmark of Castle Rock Rieslings. Lively, crisp and with an attractive delicacy now, this wine will blossom with age for at least fifteen years.
