Sick of everywhere you turn only seeing Sauvignon Blanc?
The “Sauv-alanche” as I like to call it, has made many of us forget just how good a juicy, tropical fruit driven white wine can be. Semillon, when it’s done right, reminds us of this and with classical lemons and lime notes here are a faultless example of the brilliance of the variety.
On the nose there is everything you come to expect from a Hunter Sem; classic citrus, a slight effervescent sherbet buzz and crunchy pineapple. The palate is lean and dominated by the brilliant citrus kick, but impeccably balanced and restrained acidity gives a fresh mouthfeel and looooong, great length. Yum!
Awards and Accolades
Past Vintages
2014: 93 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion "Over 150 years of accumulated family experience is on full display with this entry point wine, the '14 vintage providing its special mark of lemon curd, fruit-sweet lemon juice and lemongrass."
2014: 91 Points - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front "Effortless release, as they so often are out of Tyrrell’s when semillon is involved. Quality made to look easy. Lemongrass, lemon curd and orange rind notes. Delicious young. Will age well over the mid term at least. "
From the Winery
The 2015 vintage was one that will be remembered for its challenging conditions. In November and December we were dodging hail storms and heavy rain. As always, the best vineyards (along with some luck) rose up above the others to produce wines of great character.
Sourced from a small selection of our favourite Semillon blocks, the grapes were both hand and machine picked before gentle pressing and fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine then spent a few months on yeast lees to gain extra complexity and mouth feel.
