This iconic wine is undoubtedly the standard-bearer for Aussie Semillon!
From a classic Hunter semillon vintage, the nose is reasonably restrained, offering hints of lime and citrus characters. The palate is powerful, long and refined; a core of bright citrus fruit and tight acidity affording the wine great length. Awarded as one of the world's top white wines by Decanter magazine, we recommend you snap some up - you won't regret!
Awards and Accolades
95 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion "Sold through the Private Bin Wine Club only as a young wine, the main commercial release six years later; it obviously comes from the best, well-drained blocks that have always been the main source of Vat 1; lemon juice and lemon curd flavours follow logically from the bouquet, lemony acidity lingering long in the mouth after the wine is swallowed."
2011 Vintage: 96 Points - Ben Edwards, Australian Wine Companion "Vat 1 can always be relied upon to deliver a pure, focused and linear wine, year-in, year-out; as a young wine, there is just enough flesh for a little pleasure, with lemon sherbet, lime leaf and straw; the structure indicates a long future ahead, and real pleasure will come at least five years down the track. Certainly worth investing both time and money to watch it truly come together."
From the Winery
Sourced from two of the best blocks of semillon which have light, sandy, well drained soils. Vines planted on their own roots and dry grown. The oldest material being planted in 1923.
A late spring which lead into cooler conditions throughout November and early December with some rain. This lead up left us with above average crop levels and the top vineyards all went through a long, cool ripening period.
The grapes were hand picked then, after a relatively cool fermentation, the wine spent minimal time on yeast lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness. No oak fermentation or maturation.
