Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2014

Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Semillon.gif

This wine shows alluring aromas of lychee, lime, grapefruit, honeysuckle, blackcurrant and a hint of wet stone. The juicy, clean and fresh palate has a talcy pithy structure balancing the rich fruit flavours of limes, passionfruit and honeysuckle. The texture is creamy and the finish bright, long and elegant.

Cape Mentelle takes a minimal approach towards this classic Margaret River blend. The aim is to preserve as much fruit intensity and regional character as possible, whilst providing a full flavoured distinctive white wine. The style accentuates the fresh fruit characters of both varieties with the added complexity and palate weight offered by a small portion of barrel fermentation.

Wine Companion tasting note.

Past Accolades and Awards:

James Halliday: 94
From an 'early, short and fast harvest marked by incredibly low yields' (winemaker Rob Mann). A small portion of this wine is (old) oak-matured. There's something for everyone here. Sweet introduction but a steely seriousness to the finish. It encourages the sale and then closes the deal. Flavours of lime, passionfruit, thistles and gravel. Juicy, fresh and impressive throughout.

James Halliday: 95
Quartz-white; a 54/46% blend of 40 individually vinified parcels of grapes grown across the region, 10% barrel-fermented; the bouquet is particularly expressive with flowery, scented aromas, the palate with an almost pinot noir-like peacock's tail expansion on the finish and aftertaste with a gamut of citrus and tropical flavours.

James Halliday: 95
Bright quartz-green; this is the unwooded version of Cape Mentelle's sauvignon blanc semillon, but shows the fruit intensity and complexity that allows the (oaked) Wallcliffe version to succeed so well. Here there is a panoply of aromas and flavours spanning citrus/grapefruit, stone fruit and tropical fruits (whatever you care to mention) sustained by lovely natural acidity.

James Halliday: 96
This wine has no oak influence, unlike Mentelle’s barrel-fermented Wallcliffe. Light straw-green, it has an extra measure of intensity and drive, with an array of flavours ranging from grassy pea pod to citrus, and ultimately a touch of tropical fruit; the length is a given, likewise the balance.
