Trevor Mast has made the 2001 Billi Billi from the younger Shiraz vines at Mount Langi Ghiran, along with a portion of fruit from other select vineyard areas in Victoria. The wine is crimson in colour with intense sweet fruit aromas. There is a touch of wicked blueberry and excellent spice, balanced by subtle oak. A mix of Rhone varieties Shiraz, Grenache & Mourvedre (75%) has been blended with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc (25%). The fruit driven blend was matured in older French and American oak barrels, and has soft tannins, good length and complexity. The Shiraz contributes the spice, with the Grenache and Mourvedre softening the wine. Trevor Mast produces intense, excellent value wines on a yearly basis and this is a wonderful display with the cellaring already taken care of, showing rich plum and spicy complexity typical of Billi Billi. Lovely pepper notes on finish. Another warm, low yielding year, as reflected in both concentration of wines and the volume available. An excellent growing season, with wines consistently showing good “Langi” spiciness, complimenting generous berry fruit characters. Buy as much as you can as this will not come around again.
