d'Arenberg Galvo Garage Cabernet Merlot Cab.Franc 2006
Galvo Garage NV.jpg
This is a Bordeaux blend; the term ‘garagists’ is used to describe the producers in Bordeaux making great wines in their garage outside of the ‘Appellation Controlee’ system. The d’Arenberg wines are all made in a small-batch processing, very hands-on way (or feet, as the reds are all foot-trod) as the ‘garagists’ do. Our reds are all made in the old galvanised garage/shed/winery, hence ‘Galvo’.

Each batch of fruit received was gently crushed in our Demoisy open-mouthed, rubber-toothed crusher so as many berries as possible remained whole. They were then transferred to open fermenters where the must of seeds and skins were permanently submerged beneath the free run juice. The must received no plunging or pumping over while fermentation occurred. After the primary fermentation traditional foot-treading took place prior to basket-pressing. The combined free run and pressing components were then transferred to barrel to complete its primary and secondary fermentation. Once fermentation was complete the blending began. We realised very early on that the fruit from this vintage was some of best we’ve seen for many years and the loudest in intensity and flavours.

A very impressive Medal winner already having taken out the Korean Gold Medal with plenty more to come.

The wine’s appearance is noticeably deep and dark, suggesting a complex full-bodied, oak matured wine. The aromas are very classic Cabernet with notes of exotic dark plums, mulberry, blackcurrants, fragrant cassis and an underlying mix of dark chocolate, cherries, cured meats and spiced violets. Green runner-bean and fine-toasted, French oak, cedar notes come through as the wine opens. The palate is ripe and has an impressive elegance upon entry and then you are struck with the overwhelming complexity and presence. Extremely juicy with a wonderful deep richness and structure. A mix of pure fruit with edges of exotic notes, immense structure and length with mineral acidity and fine lacy tannins directing the fruit. 2006 vintage is regarded as one of the largest vintages ever despite starting and finishing early. Overall quality was excellent for whites and reds. Cabernet Sauvignon was a particular highlight as flavours developed at a lower than normal beaume giving complexity and depth to the flavour profile. A dry winter followed by heavy rains in spring resulted in vines with healthy, balanced canopies on most soils. A mild, early summer leading into a warmer period during veraison stopped vegetative growth allowing vines to channel energy into the fruit. Cooler ripening condition followed veraison were ideal for ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. Warmer conditions returned late February, early March which increased baumes and colour without eroding the wonderful fragrant fruit characters and levels of natural acidity.

This enigmatic 'Founders Choice' Cabernet blend made me stop in my tracks! I took a deep breath and revisited the glass. The wine floods the mouth with concentrated blackcurrants and forest berries followed by savory elements and hints of mocha, held by a tight tannin tructure with fine grained cedary oak. It was disturbing to realise the depth of this Cabernet whilst still so young and offering so much more for the future. If it had been my son, I would send him straight over for the next MENSA class. This blend for the wine society of Canada is predominately Cabernet from the best vineyards and blended with some tempranillo that combines with sound smooth chocolaty Cabernet for grip, tannin and firm structure to provide an absolute bonza food wine.

In its youth d'Arry's Original display a bright magenta like brick red colour. This lovely, spicy, plumy red combines the succulent sweet fruit of Grenache and the depth and structure of Shiraz.
A real charmer, with well-judged tannin grip. The nose invariably attacks with lifted spicy cinnamon plum, mulberry & prune aromas. Typically cherry, wild strawberry & lolly-like musk smells also, as well as tighter liquorice, spice, rosemary & fennel smells.
Parker rates this at 91/100 and says..."‘One of my consistent favorites from d’Arenberg is their d’Arry’s Original, and the terrific 2004 is a super value. A dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by beautiful blackberry, cassis, cherry, and licorice scents with hints of Provencal herbs and pepper in the
background. This medium to full-bodied, front endloaded blend of Shiraz and Grenache possesses
considerable fruit, body, and silky tannins as well as enough acidity to provide definition. Drink it over the
next 3-4 years."

The Trophy winning 2005 Hugo McLaren Vale Shiraz has received the coveted Trophy for the “Best Shiraz” Open Section at the 2007 Melbourne Wine Show from classes 46 & 51.
The award comes at a fitting time as the family owned and run estate is celebrating its 25th anniversary of making fine wine under the Hugo label and Boy! Following what was a ripper vintage in 2004 in SA. This sensational little number is often forgottten by most. We have sold pallets and pallets with it's volumes of rich plum, raspberry and bold black pepper with light toasty nut oak with hints of yummy choc/mocha.
A rich dense palate awaits choc full of forward berry fruits supported by stylishly structured tannins present a full-bodied, well balanced wine. The use of new, one and two year old American oak assists the integration of the fruit and tannin components. Blackberry and raspberry flavours combine with an engaging spicy, pepper and chocolate éclair elements.
Their tasting notes go on to recomend it be complimented with: Caper and garlic leg of lamb or Pork schnitzel with red cabbage and apple salad. I think you should enjoy the wine multiple times with friends and family and be contemplative of the good things in life less than $20-
