Solid, sturdy and reliable, Coonawarra Cabernet is a classic Australian benchmark. Distinctive deep red with brick red hues, it has a stately bouquet of rich fruitcake, cassis and polished mahogany. The palate is firm and assertive with big mouth-filling flavour of ripe blackcurrant, mint, herbs and savoury characters of tobacco, leather and smoky oak. The texture is sophisticated with firm, fine grained tannin and lovely long aftertaste. It’s an aristocratic wine that takes time to get to know. Pour a good sized glass, swirl to allow plenty of air contact, rest for a few minutes then cut some mature cheese and crackers with walnuts and dried muscatel … it’s now ready to play.
The Chris Hill Reserve wines are a collection of limited release, personal favourites that express an extra dimension of character and flavour. This Coonawarra Cabernet is well travelled and has gained a multi layered complexity along the journey. It was grown in a highly respected single vineyard in Penola, made by Grant Burge in the Barossa, sold to Thachi wines in the Riverland where it was barrel aged in French oak and intended to be exported to London for release as an exclusive label for a high street wine merchant … but the GFC put a stop to that. Chris Hill then took the wine to the Hunter Valley for the special attention of genius winemaker Liz Jackson at First Creek. The most outstanding barrels were then given an extra 12 months of maturation and the final blend received a refreshing addition of 4% 2009 Cabernet. Now, 12 months after bottling it shows character and personality that will lift any occasion to a celebration of fine dining and wonderful company.
Staff Tasting: Everything from ripe raspberries, plums and mocha chocolate on the nose, this was a joy to taste. The chocolate notes continued on the palate, helped along by brambly berries and mint. The pick of the day. Tasters: TE, MM, CN.
