A bolt of lightening struck with this GEM! Expectations were high as this wine sat on my desk for days awaiting the sample teams meeting to determine its fate. Boyo boy, was it worth the wait. It takes a pretty spectacular wine to make me sit up and and have around 3 tastings to see if the wine lasts the golden mile and keeps its review points based on quality and price.

This Cabernet was a ripper from the start - Big bright cassis and violets on the nose, hints of spice and leather from oak and long legs left in the glass. The palate is awash with plush rich fruit and stays around for ages making you think of Bowen Estate wines in a classically, perfect vintage year. Now, Cabernet can often take a number of years to develop and meld but this stinking beast is already so chic a block full of all things nice it simply smacks you straight in the face - insists - "I am here - Drink me!"

The burst of rich dark plum and cherry is beautifully weighted with light white pepper and some allspice. The acidity is well balanced and will help this wine linger for years to come along with good oak use.

This wine is non labelled - A clean skin, but I ask you to try it and then if you really need a label - perhaps make one of your own as the wine is too good to bypass for any reason.

Yum / Yum.

James Halliday:

Established in 1982, Ladbroke Grove is a relatively old Coonawarra brand. However, while the vineyards remained, winemaking and marketing lapsed until the business was purchased by John Cox and Marie Valenzuela, who have quietly gone about the re-establishment and rejuvenation of the label and were rewarded by a string of wine show results. It has extensive grape sources, including the Killian vineyard, planted in 1990 to cabernet sauvignon, merlot and chardonnay. It also leases a little over 1ha of dry-grown shiraz planted in 1965 in the centre of the Coonawarra township. In 2002 it planted another 11ha at the northern end of Coonawarra to cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, viognier, riesling and merlot. Exports to Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and China.
