St Huberts The Stag Pinot Noir 2017

St-huberts-stag-pn.gif

Lifted Yarra Pinot notes of cherry and spice, with hints of cranberries and raspberries. These fruit notes are complexed with earthy / gamey, forest floor notes, and a hint of stalks in the background.

The wine is light and approachable, soft and fleshy – light yet nicely proportioned. Cherry and cranberry flavours are framed with fine supporting tannins and lingering strawberry notes. The wine is deliberately fruit dominant, with very subtle (caramelised sugar) oak evident – and lovely Pinot length.

Awards and Accolades

91 Points - Jane Faulkner, Australian Wine Companion
"The raft of fresh and breezy, bottled early to drink early, pinot noirs coming out of the valley are really good, so, too, The Stag. Such juicy sweet red and black cherries with a decent spice kick, and its lighter frame holds suppleness, lithe tannins, fresh acidity and plenty of joy."

2015 Vintage: 95 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Magazine
"Early bottling, and tasting soon thereafter, hasn't robbed the stag of its antlers. Rather it sets the scene for what will be some exceptional pinots from the vintage. It has all the ingredients to flourish in bottle, and needs no excuses for its depth of perfectly balanced plum-infused flavours backed by ripe, fine tannins and a feather duster of French oak."

From the Winery

Meet the biggest personality out of the Yarra Valley. Hubert the Stag. With a history in the Yarra Valley dating back to 1862, it’s suffice to say St Hubert knows Yarra Valley Pinot Noir. It should be unpretentious and approachable, bright, exuberant and packed with character. Everything Pinot Noir should be, and nothing it is not. Hubert the Stag Pinot Noir is fermented in small, open fermenters, using whole bunches to add complexity before maturation takes place in a variety of new and seasoned French oak barrels.

2016 was one of the warmest Yarra Valley vintages on record, leading to one of our earliest start dates for harvest. Yields were average to above average, and the warm conditions led to a “compressed” vintage with rapid ripening in all varieties.

St Huberts “Hubert the Stag” Pinot is a serious Pinot at a modest price (sounds like an oxymoron…). First made in 2008, the Stag has won a string of Medals and Accolades in its brief history. Fruit for this wine was harvested from selected premium sites around the Yarra Valley and fermented in small, open fermenters, using whole bunches to add complexity. Maturation took place in a variety of new and seasoned French oak barrels. It is intended as an uncomplicated, fresh, fruit driven wine.
