The Yealands Estate Pinot Noir 2009 shows lifted aromas of violets, red berries and spice. The palate is refined with plum notes and complemented by silky tannins and a long savoury finish.

The wine for the Yealands Estate Pinot Noir 2009 was crafted from a carefully selected parcel of fruit from a river terrace in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough. Exposed to some of the toughest growing conditions in Marlborough; high sunshine and wind, cool nights and low rainfall, the low yielding vines produced a smaller, thicker skinned berry with intense fruit flavours.

The single parcel of low yielding Pinot Noir was handpicked at optimum ripeness and cold macerated at 6 – 8 degrees for around six days. The wine was warmed, and then inoculated with a selected yeast strain, which was followed by a fast, hot fermentation, with regular hand plunging (to develop elegance, complexity and balance). The wine was then gently pressed off post fermentation into barrels for malolactic fermentation. 30% of the parcel was aged in new French oak barriques, the balance into second and third year French oak. The parcel then underwent a light egg white fining, followed by blending and filtration prior to bottling.

In the harsh growing conditions of the Awatere Valley, Marlborough our low yielding vines produce wines with an intense varietal character. Subjected to low rainfall, high sunshine, cool nights and strong winds, we’ve nurtured the fruit from our Seaview vineyard with low impact methods, right through production in our leading edge carboNZeroCertTM certified winery. This wine reflects our aim of becoming the most sustainable wine grower in the world, creating premium wines of intensity and purity, in complete harmony with the environment.
