95% Shiraz, 5% Barbera. Considering the somewhat minimalist packaging this is a wine exploding with intense flavour and texture, like a storm in a tea cup so to speak. The purple colour is great in the glass and immediately appealing (especially on a cold winter night) and the aroma of lifted red berries (cherries, currants, and raspberries) with savoury spice notes makes an intoxicating first impression.
This same fruit and spice burst onto the palate, there’s something reminiscent of a warm compote (I swear I can taste cinnamon, cloves and plums) that gives way to some pretty fine tannins that make for a nice lingering finish. This is a great pick for drinking now, but it will cellar well for maybe another 5 years or so.
Awards and Accolades
94 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion "Includes a dash of barbera. Starts ticking the boxes with its bright colour, and continues to do so through the fragrant, gently spicy dark berry bouquet, thence the medium-bodied palate. It derives its quality through its freshness, the purity of its fruit flavours, and its supple mouthfeel."
From the Winery
The Shiraz fruit is rich, textured and perfumed. The addition of Barbera to the blend, offers some vibrant floral notes to the nose and a vibrancy and freshness to the palate. Whilst McLaren Vale is renowned for it’s Shiraz, Chalk Hill has won numerous trophies for it’s Barbera and the Chalk Hill Luna Shiraz unites two of our star wines.
