Clarendon Hills Bakers Gully Syrah 2006

This wine forms part of Clarendon Hills’ ‘Village’ wine classification.
Young vines are used to produce this energetic and exuberant syrah. Simplistic and honest, this cuvee boasts elementary varietal depth and light complexity. It is best consumed within the first 15 years of life.
Liqueur coffee edge with ‘Black Kat’ liquorice, tobacco leaf, lifted spicey leather, sweet earthiness and Kalamata skin. Superb clarity and brightness of traditional elements expected in a classic Australian Syrah.
Black fruit and savory components mingle on a weighted, meaty structure. Expressive, bright characters are counter‐weighted by restraint exhibited in this elegantly positioned and lineated example.
Young, dry grown 10 y/o vines are hand picked thereby culturing whole berry, wild yeast fermentation. This increases the retention of the grape’s varietal essence and minimises bitter tannin extract. All pressings are returned to the barrel and bottled onsite without fining or filtration.
18 months, 60% brand new, tight-grained French Oak. 40% mixture of 1-4 year old barrel hierarchy. Barrels are finally hand selected by winemaking team.
The 2006 vintage in Clarendon is best surmised as a Mediterranean finish to what was otherwise a typical Australian summer. The earlier onset of Autumnal coolness slowed ripening towards the end of the harvest season and enhanced colour development and enriched skin thickness ensued. The Bakers Gully vineyard is dry grown in sand atop of clay soils. Hand picking took place over several passes to ensure optimal ripeness of the fruit.
Planted in 1995, this vineyard was named after its proximity to a neighbouring gully and is situated on a gradually declining, western-sloping plain. It is the youngest of the Clarendon Hills range, and produces entry-point cuvee or ‘village wine’ for Clarendon Hills.
