Relatively light in colour displaying a semi translucent dark crimson red colour with crimson mauve hue. Perfumed nose with aromas of violets and dark cherries followed by some toasty clove like characters and spice.
Medium to full weight, the palate is very elegant. Flavours of ripe dark cherries and plums are followed by some clove and spice characters. Velvet smooth tannins with aftertaste of dark cherry, plum, clove and spice.
Accolades and Awards
2015 Vintage: 96 Points, Special Value Wine - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion "From the original vineyard planted '94, open-fermented with 2-4% viognier, 20% whole bunches, matured for 18 months in French oak (20% new). The aromas are particularly complex and fragrant, charcuterie and allspice decorating the concourse of black cherry and satsuma plum of the bouquet and medium to full-bodied palate. The management of the viognier addition, the tannins, and the oak, made perfect by long practice."
2015 Vintage: 94 Points - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front "Touch of smoke, game meat, stewed cherry-red berry. Really pleasing, warm scents of ripe fruit, judicious spice, inviting a drinker in. Soft textured, sweet with cherry fruitiness, texture like velvet brushed the wrong way, great length of flavour, great depth of flavour. Licks of cherry sour-sweet fruit character and peppery-clove spice too. There’s a northern Rhone-esque feel to the wine, though it is wholly its own thing, and wonderful."
From the Winery
This shiraz fruit comes from an original By Farr site, planted in 1994 in black cracking clay soil, which dries very quickly. This is the first of the shiraz vineyards to be picked and, being the warmer site, fits perfectly into the Farr Rising line-up. Farr Rising shiraz shows how refinement and fruit flavour can come together.
The fruit is 85 to 90 per cent destemmed before being cooled and placed in the tank for 19 days to ferment naturally. Shiraz sees 18 months in French oak, 10 per cent being new, and is bottled under vacuum.
