Deep red black in colour, the nose offers a wonderful array of spice and black pepper aromas from shiraz coupled with liquorice notes from the Tempranillo component. The palate is fleshy and offers great depth of dark fruit and ripe plums. Tempranillo adds savoury notes and a complex tannin structure. A great marriage of two classic varietals!
Awards and Accolades
2014 Vintage: 93 Points, Special Value Wine - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion "As soon as you open it you know you're onto something good. It's chocolatey and red/black berried and while not at all heavy, it still manages to fill all corners of your mouth with flavour. It feels and tastes good, and finishes well."
From the Winery
It has been a carefree run for winemakers in Margaret River over the last eight seasons with perfect season following one after another, and then 2015 came along and took us out of our comfort zone.
In the late part of 2014, in October particularly, we experienced some of the wildest windiest weather for decades, resulting in one of the worst flowerings on record with windy and wet conditions seriously compromising fruit set with the result that the yields of 2015 were the lowest that I have experienced in 23 years of growing grapes in the South West. Ouch.
The season itself was quite warm in the early part, and very dry. We had a break between white and red varieties as the summer stuttered with some cooler weather giving an extended ripening period for red varieties resulting in well coloured and beautifully ripe grapes. The 2015 red wines are wonderfully well balanced medium bodied, even elegantly structured that may prove to be some of the wines of the decade. Albeit in worryingly small quantities.
Both Shiraz and Tempranillo were de-stemmed and fermented separately in open vessels with extensive pump over cap management to aid colour and flavour extraction as well as optimize the tannin development. The wines were pressed off skins and matured in French oak barriques, approximately one third new oak with the balance one and two year old. After 15 months in barrel the wines were blended according to taste.
