  Torbreck The Struie 2016

The Struie.gif

The Shiraz grapes for The Struie come from old vines in the Barossa and Eden Valleys. The Eden component brings floral spicy aromas that are supported by more brooding notes of tar and chocolate from the Barossa. The palate is luscious and silky, and this is a Fine Wine favourite.

Fans of Barossa Shiraz will no doubt love this wine as much as I do and for those who think big, Barossa Shiraz is 'out of fashion' all I can say is while fads come and go in the wine industry as much as any, a truly great wine will always remain just that... a great wine!

Awards and Accolades

2014: Vintage: 96 Points, Chris Shanahan
"Like a black hole sucking in stars, Torbreck "The Laird" Shiraz 2010 ($750) held 30 tasters captive, powerless to reach the other nine reds on the table. And little wonder. The Laird's deep, dark power sucked the marrow from our bones and filled our heads with awe. But further out in the Torbreck constellation, we later found the heavenly, if not divine, Struie. Powerful Shiraz from the Barossa Valley, tamed by more elegant Eden Valley fruit, gives The Struie sumptuous, earthy, savoury richness, with layers of harmonious flavours and tannins."

The Winery

The view from the Struie down across the Dornoch Firth is as inspiring as that of the Valley floor from the Barossa Ranges.

This wine is a blend of Shiraz from the Eden and Barossa Valleys, combining the best of both regions. Sourced from several elevated sites throughout the Barossa & Eden Valleys, the Struie reflects the cooler side of the region and showcases the subtle nuances that are gained from hillside viticulture.

The 2016 wines benefitted from a dryer spring and start to summer, producing small bunches and bunch numbers with tiny concentrated berries. The fruit has wonderful depth of colour and perfect balance. The Eden Valley component brings a purity and freshness which balances the rich Barossa Valley fruit perfectly.

One of the deepest and concentrated aromatic Struie wines we’ve produced, the harmonious combination of both regions has again delivered a wine with layers of dark chocolate characters and defining structure. Nuances of plum, blackberries, violets and hidden spice characters all further enhance the natural elegance and tension of the fruit quality. The 2016 Struie will certainly age tremendously well for next decade.
