Heggies Riesling is a pale straw colour with green tints, showing intense aromatics of white flowers, lemon blossom, a hint of spicy musk and the classic Eden Valley aromas of wet stone. The wine shows great length and drive. The palate is complex with flavours of lemon curd, talc and lime zest finishing with a touch of spice and the typical Heggies Vineyard mouth-watering acidity. Heggies Vineyard Riesling is an outstanding wine in its youth, though will cellar for 10 to 15 years. Try the wine with fresh sashimi. Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
Awards and Accolades
SILVER - Canberra International Riesling Challenge 2016
93 Points - James Halliday, Wine Companion "Since its first vintage in '79, Heggies has established itself as a top flight riesling vineyard. The bouquet has floral, citrus-accented aromas, but the energy and intensity of the palate can catch you by surprise; lemon citrus has an undertone of passionfruit, making it a drink whenever proposition."
91+ Points - Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front "Lots of spritz. Lots of perfume. Highly aromatic style with red apple, lime rind and lime blossom flavours. Pretty. Almost textural. And definitely elegant in the way it slips through the mouth. Will drink well young. Great option for this coming summer. Bring it on."
From the Winery
Eden Valley had good rainfall from April to July but was quite dry for the spring and early summer months. These mild conditions allowed an early bud break and generous Riesling crops to set. Heggies vineyard has limited water availability so a down-pour in early January was welcome to freshen the grapes and carry them through to an early harvest. Heggies Vineyard Riesling grapes are picked in the cool of the night and swiftly transported to our winery. There is minimal handling of the fruit and only the free run juice is selected for the Heggies Vineyard Riesling 2015. The juice is fermented at cool temperatures using aromatic yeasts and blended early at the completion of fermentation.
Heggies Vineyard is the sort of place a man would sit on his horse in silence at sunset and marvel at the ways of nature. Through the combination of innovative viticultural practices and unique ‘terroir’, this challenging and picturesque estate vineyard produces distinctive, balanced wines – beautifully structured and long on flavour.
Nestled in the high country of the Eden Valley, Heggies Vineyard is situated at an altitude of 550m above sea level where the soil is a thin layer of grey sandy loam over clay and decomposed rock. With only 787mm of average annual rainfall, the vines compete vigorously for moisture and nutrient, producing wines of full flavour, finesse and balance.
