This wine is bright straw yellow in appearance with green tints. The aromas are fresh. A fantastic lift of white peach, intense lemon citrus and jasmine, enhanced by hints of fresh nettles and spice. The palate shows formidable lime, grapefruit, guava and citrus elements with an overall generosity of fruit based sweetness, supported by a natural acid backbone.
This Jim Barry Riesling is classic Watervale—lemons, limes and a wonderfully clean, crisp finish. Just like a deliciously fresh party in your mouth. Enjoy!
Accolades and Awards
2016 Vintage: 94 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion "One of the first out of the blocks for '16. Jim Barry's Rieslings have exceptionally low pH, starting as low as 2.86, and acidity as high are 7.3g/l. This is a vibrantly alive wine, with vivid lime and mineral flavours on the long palate. Please yourself whether you drink it now or 10 years hence. Value++."
2016 Vintage: 93 Points - Gary Walsh, Wine Front "Even as a baby, this looks like being a very good ‘classic’ release of Watervale Riesling. It’s clean, quite pretty, with ripe lemon and lime, has clean acidity, a stony feel along with a good amount of flavour and a kiss of sweetness. Finish has crunch and finesse, with length to go. Already a pleasure to drink. Get stuck in."
From the Winery
The tiny village of Watervale (population of 246), nestled in South Australia’s Clare Valley, is renowned for the quality of its Riesling. Our Watervale Riesling is picked from a special part of the Florita vineyard in Watervale. This famous Riesling vineyard usually achieves full ripeness, with high natural acid levels.
Wine has been flowing in the Clare Valley since 1851 and is an integral part of the culture. It is one of Australia’s most prestigious premium wine regions, most famous for its Riesling and Shiraz. A small area, accounting for less than 1.5% of Australia’s total wine production. With its beautiful, rolling hills, ideal winter rainfall and Mediterranean climate, the Clare Valley carries a unique history and winemaking heritage
The late Jim Barry was a pioneer of the Australian wine industry. He was the first qualified winemaker to work in the Clare Valley of South Australia and with his wife, Nancy, built a successful wine business which has produced trophy-winning wines since its establishment in 1959. Today, the company is headed by Jim’s second son Peter, who took over from his father as Managing Director.
