Sick of everywhere you turn only seeing Sauvignon Blanc?
The “Sauv-alanche” as I like to call it, has made many of us forget just how good a juicy, tropical fruit driven white wine can be. Semillon, when it’s done right, reminds us of this and with classical lemons and lime notes here are a faultless example of the brilliance of the variety.
On the nose there is everything you come to expect from a Hunter Sem; classic citrus, a slight effervescent sherbet buzz and crunchy pineapple. The palate is lean and dominated by the brilliant citrus kick, but impeccably balanced and restrained acidity gives a fresh mouthfeel and looooong, great length. Yum!
Awards and Accolades
94 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front "Lemon barley, lemongrass, talc and ester perfume. There’s a softness and roundness to the acidity here that’s very appealing, which along with ample lemon/lime flavour and a delightful chalky texture, makes it immediately appealing. It’s long too. A lot of wine for your money here."
2015 Vintage: 93 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion "Hunter Valley semillon crashed through the $20 barrier for well made entry point wines not long after it broached the $15 barrier. The trick is to be sure the wine is ready to go now, future development a bonus prize."
From the Winery
The 2017 Semillon vintage was one of the best in recent memory and has produced wines of the highest quality. Solid rains in winter and spring meant the vines had constant access to water and the warmer weather in the new year meant all of the fruit was in near perfect condition and ripeness when it was harvested.
Sourced entirely from our HVD Vineyard, the grapes were machine picked in the cool of the night before gentle pressing and fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine then spent a few months on yeast lees to gain extra complexity and mouth feel.
