Lengs & Cooter Old Vine Reserve Shiraz 2003 |

Robert M. Parker Jr's The Wine Advocate Issue 161 Lengs & Cooter 2003 Reserve Shiraz - It's 15.6% Alcohol is well-concealed behind copious quantities of of blackberry and cassis fruit as well as subtle oak. It is a big, deep full-throttle South Australian Shiraz, which as the owners state, "can be drunk now with the appropriate hunk of meat", or cellared for a decade. 92+ points All fruit, the bulk of which is sourced from the sandy slopes of Blewitt Springs in the McLaren Vale Region, was hand picked and fermented in traditional open fermenters and the cap plunged regularly for maximum extraction. On completion of fermentation the skins were pressed using a basket press. The resultant wine was then aged for 20 months in American Oak barriques. A blend of new oak from several different coopers provides interest and complexity. The resultant wine is deep red with a touch of purple youthfulness on the rim. A powerful bouquet of black and red berry fruits, dark chocolate and spicy, smoky oak are featured. The palate is a complex combination of fruit and oak well balanced with acid and fine grain tannin providing a clean finish. 14.5% alc/vol. A well balanced wine that can be drunk now in it's youth or cellared for many years . Given good cellaring this will drink well for the next 2 to 8 years.
Serious, intelligent boys diligently plying their skills very smartly with terrific wines that 'hunters and collectors' rave about because they are 'In the know'! Black to pruple colour and brooding for a fight with your tonsils. Nothing like the sweet majestic fruit from McLaren Vale to provide the mixed benefits of concentrated rich savoury and sweet fruit. Lovingly watched and basket pressed of goodness to be matched with Oak and left to gather formiddable strength, character and complexity. I can stop you here by adding the following, buy a bottle and put it up against something from a well known brand ( you know the ones) and rate it for your self. Boomer for value, length and enjoyment.

| The 2005 Mad Hatter is a rich and intense wine with an inky/ruby/purple colour and a hedonistic, wild perfume of melted liquorice, creme de cassis, blackberries, flowers, and minerals. Theese aromas are followed by an even more powerful, concentrated mid-palate with superb flavours of chocolate, blackberry and mocha coupled with fine ripe tannins. The Finish is long and multidimensional. This complex Shiraz can be drunk now, or cellared for 10-12+ years. |

I had this definitive Shiraz with a meal in a very good Italian restaurant the other night and almost feinted! Small hand picked parcels of OLD VINE Shiraz fruit from the Blewitt Springs area are made by using very much handcrafted skills in the Italian 'Aperppasimento' style. Having been dried on a rack for a month to 6 weeks he is left with dark, shrivelled little raisins. Mark my words, this is where intensity starts as via Open Vat fermentation and Basket Pressing they yield a awesome, intense, concentrated juice that is better than the best Shiraz I have ever seen.
16% Alc. is Big and this does not scare me as it shows intensity through many layers of complex and intriguing fruit, oak, tannin and acid to blow your senses away.
I am not sure if you have bought petrol this month yet , but if the budget allows, you must have some of this for the cellar and feel free to thank me later! Salute! |
