Quarry Road Black Bull Creek Big Red 2006
Quarry Road Black Bull Red.gif
Well I asked for a soft ripe big red that is juicy yet still had some grippy tannins to attract red wine drinkers from both ends of the spectrum and have them coming back for more! Black Bull creek is where we drew the line. Big bold luscious Merlot, tannins aplenty from the Cabernet and some spicy Malbec to add weight and piquancy. Sensational oak treatment over 18 months has developed the combination beautifully to produce a hefty wine with spicey charcter and will definitley cellar well or drink beautifully tonight.
Rates at 90/100

Alrighty! Get on the buzzer and email your mates because this smashing little wine from my mates in Mclaren Vale have given me access once again to a ripper of an export line.
A remarkable vintage in 2004 and well known now for producing some very serious weighted Cabernet from this region. I found this little export beauty shares many of the trade mark Coonawarra Cabernet X Factor! Matured for 8 months in French Oak and American barrels this little rip snorter is a rich brick red Cabernet blend with Purple hues and the nose shows hints of lifted blackberry and rich forresty vibrant mouth filling flavours from portions of Merlot and Petit Verdot. This regional example of a wine with richness, purity and fine tannins combine to deliver an opulent mouthfeel along with concentration of color and flavour

Trevor Mast has made the 2001 Billi Billi from the younger Shiraz vines at Mount Langi Ghiran, along with a portion of fruit from other select vineyard areas in Victoria.
The wine is crimson in colour with intense sweet fruit aromas. There is a touch of blueberry and excellent spice, balanced by subtle oak. A mix of Rhone varieties Shiraz, Grenache & Mourvedre (75%) has been blended with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc (25%). The fruit driven blend was matured in older French and American oak barrels, and has soft
tannins, good length and complexity. The Shiraz contributes the spice, with the Grenache and Mourvedre softening the wine.

Trevor Mast produces intense, excellent value wines on a yearly basis and this is a wonderful display with the cellaring already taken care of, showing rich plum and spicy complexity typical of Billi Billi. Lovely pepper notes on finish. Another warm, low yielding year, as reflected in both concentration of wines and the volume available. An excellent growing season, with wines consistently showing good “Langi” spiciness, complimenting generous berry fruit characters. Buy as much as you can as this will not come around again.

The appearance is vibrant with red cherry centre and looks fabulous. Upon pouring, fragrant Grenache notes of violets, ripe red-fruit jams, spice, strawberry, cranberry and mulberry characters with flowery, earthy, liquorice, pot-pouri notes developing as the wine opens up.
The palate is medium bodied, fleshy with a concentrated array of red berries, dark sweet plums,
strawberries and spicy softness. Fruit sweetness takes hold midway through the palate and then explodes with fruit flavours and lively, ripe, gritty, fragrant tannins that linger on past the finish of the wine. Presently the wine is not as big as some previous years due to the cooler growing season but it’s clearly one of the more refined and elegant Custodians made for some time.
The wine is perfectly balanced between fruit weight, level of concentration, tannins and acidity as your mouth quickly salivates for a second helping. That’s Grenache for you.

Great to see such a balanced, attractive, clean Trinders - it's a label that's had something of a roller-coaster ride over the past six or seven years. This release is a strong one. Dusty, gravelly, herbal and yet ripe, with dry blackcurrant swinging through a fine mesh of tannin. It finishes clean and fruity, and will cellar for at least 10 years - but will be at its best in the medium term. Drink: 2006-2015. 91 points. Campbell Mattinson, The Winefront
