Quarry Road Black Bull Creek Big Red 2006 |
|

Well I asked for a soft ripe big red that is juicy yet still had some grippy tannins to attract red wine drinkers from both ends of the spectrum and have them coming back for more! Black Bull creek is where we drew the line. Big bold luscious Merlot, tannins aplenty from the Cabernet and some spicy Malbec to add weight and piquancy. Sensational oak treatment over 18 months has developed the combination beautifully to produce a hefty wine with spicey charcter and will definitley cellar well or drink beautifully tonight. Rates at 90/100

The appearance is vibrant with red cherry centre and looks fabulous. Upon pouring, fragrant Grenache notes of violets, ripe red-fruit jams, spice, strawberry, cranberry and mulberry characters with flowery, earthy, liquorice, pot-pouri notes developing as the wine opens up. The palate is medium bodied, fleshy with a concentrated array of red berries, dark sweet plums, strawberries and spicy softness. Fruit sweetness takes hold midway through the palate and then explodes with fruit flavours and lively, ripe, gritty, fragrant tannins that linger on past the finish of the wine. Presently the wine is not as big as some previous years due to the cooler growing season but it’s clearly one of the more refined and elegant Custodians made for some time. The wine is perfectly balanced between fruit weight, level of concentration, tannins and acidity as your mouth quickly salivates for a second helping. That’s Grenache for you. |

Great to see such a balanced, attractive, clean Trinders - it's a label that's had something of a roller-coaster ride over the past six or seven years. This release is a strong one. Dusty, gravelly, herbal and yet ripe, with dry blackcurrant swinging through a fine mesh of tannin. It finishes clean and fruity, and will cellar for at least 10 years - but will be at its best in the medium term. Drink: 2006-2015. 91 points. Campbell Mattinson, The Winefront |
