We have sold thousands of cases of the previous vintages and around the traps it has been said again and again that there is something truly remarkable about the Mt Monster's Back Block Shiraz.
This 2015 vintage monster is a ripper and gaining traction as one of the best wines per dollar and is a glowing example of great vintage, a great wine maker and a great wine! Like a teenager coming of age and starting to converse as opposed to grunting, this wine is getting better every day.
Throw some of this Monster into a glass and it will reveal a deep purple colour. A swirl or two and the vibrancy comes through; sprinkles of red brick flicker through, dancing around under the light. A quick sniff and the aromas are lifted dark cherry, black pepper and spice with floral notes with ripe blackberry and plums coming together in a crescendo of aromatic heaven.
It is Limestone Coast at is fullest, and that comes through on the palate as well, displaying the stereotypical fruit driven style that this region is famous for. There are forest fruits coupled with spice and a touch of tannin that caresses the sides of the mouth. These soft tannins are a great compliment to the fruit and come to a crescendo on the finish, leaving the mouth feeling full and satisfied with a generous finish.
From the Winery
The wines from Mt. Monster express full varietal flavours, take advantage of the Padthaway’s maritime climate with its long slow ripening season and unique soils. We use traditional winemaking methods, complemented by modern winemaking technology with minimal processing to ensure the purity, integrity, texture and flavour from our vineyard.
Our pursuit of great wine can also be seen in the meticulous management of our vineyard. We strive for low crop yields and small grape bunches of intense flavour, and whilst we employ the latest technology in the vineyard to help us achieve vine balance and reduced vigour, we harvest when the fruit reaches full flavour development.
