As soon as I opened up this Cab, I knew I was in for something special. That plump blackcurrant perfume literally jumped out of the glass. It's an unique and intense mash of sweet blackcurrant pastilles, with hints of mint and a tobacco-like oak endnote.
Class and elegance screams through in every drop of this brilliant Cabernet, there is the familiar dustiness we all love, one glass takes you to a paddock with red loam soil under your fingernails and on your hands, a wine that knows the value of hard work. A Cabernet that offers up much more than you would expect for it's price ticket. From good heritage and prime real estate, I'm converted!
After letting it sit for an hour or so I came back and it had opened right up and the fruit was much softer and more subdued, it seems much more mature already with a cassis and almost mahogany like oak sense now. All of those delicious blackcurrant characters return on the palate, without too much freshness though, they are more stewed and subdued and slightly plummy. In the classic mid-weight style of old, the palate is perfectly balanced and although the big berry flavours dominate, there is a strong presence of cassis, spice and a smokiness that all work in harmony with the sweet finely grained tannins.
Golden Vista or Golden Ticket? We have happened upon some premium wines from a multi-award winning Victorian producer that were relabelled and set for export - only they missed the boat!
Golden Vista:
This label represents the peaceful feel of the vineyard and winery in the weeks following a bustling harvest period. The deciduous leaves slowly turn to a golden yellow and bronze as the days shorten and the vines prepare to enter their dormant slumber. A brooding monster with rich blackberry, cranberry, black currant and peppercorn are the flavours you can expect. On the palate it is engagingly rich, full, yet soft and warming. It is suited to BBQ meats, venison or quail and can be aged for 5 years.
