What is Organic wine?

Organically grown wines have been winning favour with consumers in the UK & Europe for many years.  In recent times, demand for organically grown wines have grown amongst Australian consumers. Wine Box Warehouse is committed to bringing you quality organic and low preservative wines and beers.

Organic Grape Growing Practices are Sustainable

Vineyards are managed to minimize the impact on organisms & micro-organisms living in the ground.  For example, tilling the soil is discouraged, as it disrupts the biological activity in the soil – as an alternative, the organic grape grower will control vine undergrowth through mowing & slashing.

No Synthetic Chemicals

All inputs, both during the growing of the grapes and the making of the wine, are ‘nature equivalent’.  Rather than using artificial fertilizers, growers enrich their vineyards with compost made from animal manures & other organic matter.  Another organic alternative to conventional viticulture is the use of naturally derived sprays to control fungal outbreaks in the vineyard – sprays based on canola oil or whey are used for this purpose.

Less Preservatives

The most common misconception about organic wines is that they are ‘preservative free’.  Most are not. In fact, sulphur dioxide, in minimal quantities, is a natural by-product of fermentation.  However, wines labelled as ‘organic’ will tend to be much lower in preservatives, according to the current legislation for organic viticulture.  Whilst conventional wines may contain up to 250ppm of Sulphur Dioxide, (the main preservative in wines), organic wines are limited to a maximum of 125ppm – although many organic wines, particularly the reds, will be much lower than this.

GMO free

Certified organic foods of any kind, including wine, are the only foods guaranteed free of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) – this is verified by independent third party audits.

Is Organic wine better for you?

Health is obviously the main reason consumers are turning to organic wine.  Often when diagnosed with a serious health problem doctors prescribe healthier diets which can include giving up wine but in many cases due to low preservative levels organic wines can be an option. Common diseases such as asthma can be triggered by chemicals and preservatives.  Sneezing and rashes can also be the result of consuming chemicals and preservatives in conventional wine.
