Pertaringa Understudy Cabernet 2003

Pertaringa Understudy Cabernet Petit Verdot 2003
Wine; Pertaringa’s Understudy Cabernet is so named as it is just that; this wine is the next in line to our flagship red, Pertaringa’s Rifle and Hunt Cabernet Sauvignon. No second fiddle, Understudy Cabernet is a stylistic contrast to our Rifle and Hunt, and is traditionally vinified before maturation in French and American Oak, with a view to immediate drink ability. Although this wine will undoubtedly cellar well, as have previous vintages, like all great Understudy’s 2003 won’t like to be kept waiting in the wings for too long before they perform. 7% Petit Verdot is included in this wine for added depth of character.

Vintage; The beginning of the 2003 vintage was extremely dry, due to the drought that was gripping Australia at this time. Towards the end of the vintage there was a touch of rain that helped to settle the dust and prevent the vines from completely dehydrating. In the McLaren Vale district the yields of most varieties were down considerably. These low yields coupled with ideal ripening conditions, meant the vintage ran one to two weeks early.

Tasting Note; Pertaringa's Understudy Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep, almost crimson purple colour. Aromas of fragrant blackcurrant fruit, mulberry, cedary cinnamon spice, and barrel ferment are eminent on the nose. Mulberry flavours are also present on the palate, with some cassis, blueberry and sweet rhubarb followed by firm but fine grained tannins.
