Viticulture: Estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon from the Alexander Park Vineyard. The vineyard is situated in the Strathbogie Ranges, 140 kilometres north of Melbourne, at an altitude of 510 metres above sea level. The Strathbogie Ranges are at the forefront of cool climate viticulture in Australia. The vines are on Vertical Shoot Positioned trellises. Soils are well drained granitic and clay loams. Four different clones are planted and the vines have a planting density of 750 to 900 per acre. vintage 2001 is rated very good, with warm growing conditions throughout the ripening period. Winemaking: Harvested in the warm of the day to assist in onset of fermentation. Fermentation was undertaken in static fermenters to extract maximum colour and flavour. Post fermentation, extended maceration was employed to soften tannins. The wine was transferred to new American (50%) and French (50%) oak barriques for 12 months maturation. Bottled: December 2003 Tasting Notes: Colour: Deep Red to Crimson Nose: Plum and forest berry fruits with cassis and savoury wood spices. Palate: Black currant mid palate opulence follows from up front ripe berry and plum fruits. Complementary savoury oak is enveloped by the rich fruit finish. Alexander Park Cabernet Sauvignon has been made to be enjoyed when released but careful cellaring will result in added complexity. The wine has elegance and finesse, which are hallmarks of premium wines of the Strathbogie Ranges.
