Geoff Hardy Handcrafted Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 |
In 1987 Geoff Hardy and his family began planting 30 hectares of vines with the aim of growing the highest quality grapes for producing super premium wines. The site, named Kuitpo (‘ky-po’) Vineyard, is located along the ridge of the Southwest escarpment of the Mount Lofty Ranges, at a height of between 300 – 350 meters above sea level. The combination of this altitude, climate and ancient soils has made this site ideal for a premium cool climate vineyard. As this vineyard is the first significant planting in the Kuitpo region, most people refer to it now as the ‘K1’ vineyard.
At 15%Alc/Vol this is a sensatinal blend of Premium fruit from Limestone Coast and Adelaide hills. The 2004 vintage which was cool and dry, providing slow ripening over an extended period. This vintage has been hailed by many to be the absolute ripper and with the ensuing lean years ahead a good suggestion is to rip a few of these dozens into your cellar. This is a complex and beautifully crafted wine. Its bouquet is quintessentially Cabernet Sauvignon. Un-mistakably crafted by experts showing varietal cool-climate in character, revealing its intense blackberries and dark plums, dark olives complemented with subtle cedar/vanilla oak with undertones of aromatic herbaceous qualities. The pallet displays a rich tapestry inn abundance of forest fruits with wonderful hits of sweet cassis. Its tannins are firm and fine-grained which contribute in this wines great balance and elegance. I know you won't be able to help your self but try and put some away as this is seriously great wine and a fraction of the cost. To allow the superb varietal characteristics of this wine to shine we strongly suggest decanting and/or allowing the wine to breath before serving. Rate 95/100 Drink 2010-2022

Great to see such a balanced, attractive, clean Trinders - it's a label that's had something of a roller-coaster ride over the past six or seven years. This release is a strong one. Dusty, gravelly, herbal and yet ripe, with dry blackcurrant swinging through a fine mesh of tannin. It finishes clean and fruity, and will cellar for at least 10 years - but will be at its best in the medium term. Drink: 2006-2015. 91 points. Campbell Mattinson, The Winefront |

*****93/100***** Halliday 2008
Hungerford Hill has been rated as a 5 Star winery by James Halliday. The 5 star rating recognises Hungerford Hill as an "outstanding winery capable of producing wines of very high quality." "Attractive blackcurrant and mulberry fruit; good line without without the Cabernet doughnut structure; French oak integrated and balanced." The best Cabernet are often kept to achieve some bottle age and complexity and this saving makes fantastic buying for supreme quality. |
