Iain Riggs has been passionate about exploring new premium regions to produce single vineyard wines, as each vintage allows, ensuring that quality will never be compromised. Our Single Vineyard Selection typifies Brokenwood's focus on excellence and our passion for making great wine.

The multi-regional blend wines, such as the popular Cricket Pitch range, are sourced from premium regions throughout Australia to create a style that demonstrate balance, elegance and consistency.

While the size of the company has grown, the operation remains deliberately labour intensive, being the only way of assuring the individuality of the wines.

Coal Black with voluminous amounts of sweet mulberry spicey with good amounts of vanillian oak to seduce you into a thoughtful expression of mid pallet mind drift as expressive tannin structure gives the overall wine backbone and structure.

Pretty good wine I would say and well reviewed by most wine writers, give this onto your short term cellar for the next 2-5 years.

This is the fifth and largest release of ?The Schnell’. The grapes come from 6 different growers. This year sees the largest percentage of Shiraz to date but it’s still very much true to style. The wine is a juicy, vibrant hugely appealing style. Aged 10 months in oak, 20% in new French and American oak, the balance in older and shaven oak. Deep in colour with warm berry fruits on a vibrant nose with spice and a touch of oak. It’s full bodied with a lovely rich texture. Vibrant berry and cherry fruit, with lots of spice, and creamy integrated oak this makes it really voluptuous. Hugely appealing and has that classic Magpie hallmark of great drinkability.

In its youth d'Arry's Original display a bright magenta like brick red colour. This lovely, spicy, plumy red combines the succulent sweet fruit of Grenache and the depth and structure of Shiraz.
A real charmer, with well-judged tannin grip. The nose invariably attacks with lifted spicy cinnamon plum, mulberry & prune aromas. Typically cherry, wild strawberry & lolly-like musk smells also, as well as tighter liquorice, spice, rosemary & fennel smells.
Parker rates this at 91/100 and says..."?One of my consistent favorites from d’Arenberg is their d’Arry’s Original, and the terrific 2004 is a super value. A dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by beautiful blackberry, cassis, cherry, and licorice scents with hints of Provencal herbs and pepper in the
background. This medium to full-bodied, front endloaded blend of Shiraz and Grenache possesses
considerable fruit, body, and silky tannins as well as enough acidity to provide definition. Drink it over the
next 3-4 years."

The appearance is vibrant with red cherry centre and looks fabulous. Upon pouring, fragrant Grenache notes of violets, ripe red-fruit jams, spice, strawberry, cranberry and mulberry characters with flowery, earthy, liquorice, pot-pouri notes developing as the wine opens up.
The palate is medium bodied, fleshy with a concentrated array of red berries, dark sweet plums,
strawberries and spicy softness. Fruit sweetness takes hold midway through the palate and then explodes with fruit flavours and lively, ripe, gritty, fragrant tannins that linger on past the finish of the wine. Presently the wine is not as big as some previous years due to the cooler growing season but it’s clearly one of the more refined and elegant Custodians made for some time.
The wine is perfectly balanced between fruit weight, level of concentration, tannins and acidity as your mouth quickly salivates for a second helping. That’s Grenache for you.

Grenache is one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world. Peter and Christie Schulz have very old, low yielding vines, gravely soil, and maturation in oak which are the ingredients needed to produce a full bodied style as this. Grenache is well known in Europe where the vignerons of the Rhône Valley in France and the Rioja in Spain hold it in high regard. The 2006 Grenache displays aromas of dark cherry, plum and spice. The palate is full with cherry chocolate and plum flavours, overlain with warmth and peppery spices.
